The Research Unit on Advanced Digital Systems and Services for Education and Learning (ASK) was founded in 2000 by Prof. Demetrios G. Sampson, Associate Professor at the Department of Digital Systems of the University of Piraeus.

ASK has a long history of European and World-wide Research and Development activities in the area of Technology-enhanced Learning, mainly in the areas of: e-Pedagogy and Educational Design in Technology-Enhanced Learning, Adaptive and Personalized Technology-Enhanced Learning, One-to-One Technology Enhanced Learning through Wireless, Mobile and Ubiquitous Devices, Digital Game and Intelligent Toy Enhanced Learning, Learning Object and Educational Metadata, Open Content and Learning Technology Standards, Web 2.0 and Social Computing for Learning, Technology-Enhanced Competence-Based Learning, Inclusive Technology-Enhanced Training for People with Disabilities.

The main achievements of ASK during the past twelve (12) years, in the above areas can be summarized as follows:

Participation in 39 R&D projects (17 EC funded Projects, 11 National Projects, 11 Industrial Subcontracts) attracting total external funding at the range of 5,1 Million Euro with 4 running and 35 successfully completed projects. More than 266 scientific publications in book chapters, journals and conference proceedings, with at least 1053 known citations (with h-index 20) and six (6) Best Paper Awards in International Conferences on Advanced Learning Technologies (August 2001, August 2004, July 2007, July 2009, November 2010, July 2011). Scientific World Leadership in the field of Technology-enhanced Learning, with Co-Editorship of the Educational Technology and Society Journal, (one of the top research journals in the field based on its impact factor) and Co-Chairship of major international conferences on Learning Technologies, such as IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies Active participation in European and International Centers of Excellency such as, IEEE Computer Society Learning Technologies Technical Committee, CEN/ISSS Learning Technlogies Workshop and the IMS Global Learning Consortium, Inc.
